turn off your vehicle, please.

I’ve had requests for turn off your vehicle, please cards from folks in Seattle who are annoyed by idling vehicles in Puget Sound ferry lines as well as friends in Jackson who missed out on the first batch of 500 cards. Since the time and expense involved in reprinting the original cards is prohibitive, I’m taking a reader’s suggestion and am offering a version of the cards for you to download right here, right now.
It’s easy:
- download the word.doc
- buy some Avery business card sheets (10/sheet) from your local office supply store
- print (make sure to test your printing before you stick a batch of the Avery sheets into your printer, hit print and walk away; I had to adjust the vertical margins slightly to get everything to line up.)
- distribute
THANKS for your efforts to discourage folks from needlessly idling their cars!

It is illegal in Wyoming to leave a car with its motor running unattended. WY ST 31-5-509. A letter to all sheriffs, polic chiefs, local governments, and newspapers Letter-to-the-Editor might help enforce this law. Canada has an Office of Natural Resource Conservation to deal with energy waste and idling. School kids in Canada designed no-idling posters to be displayed outside the school, post office, convenience stores to reduce unnecesary idling. I downloaded the "Warming" cards and double sided them with "Illegal to idle unattended WY St 31-5-509" and "Car Talk Guys said 3 minutes in winter, 30 seconds in summer is all you ever need to warm up your car" on the back.

I got one of your carbon neutral journal cards put on my car in front of the post office the other day. Yes, my car was running while I literally ran inside, dropped off a letter and RAN back out. But, now that you've alerted me, I'll be sure to leave it running EVERY day so you'll run our of these ridiculous cards.
Wyoming has some pretty dumb laws - WY St 31-5-509- let's go put cards on all the cars that are parked without setting the emergency brakes - which you'd better NEVER do in the winter in this cold country! Some big fancy pants lawyer from New York (or Timbuktu) wrote this dumb law and the equally dumb legislature passed it as worded, KNOWING that it could NEVER be enforced UNLESS there was another reason for calling the law. Car rolls down the hill, hits another car -ticket. No harm - no foul.
I don't like YOUR card thing. It's littering and it's a stupid waste of paper for one 2. There is no evidence that global warming is in fact anything other than the "normal" climate variation of our planet - nobody's hiding scientific findings from us - there is no evidence because there IS NO EVIDENCE! and 3. I really don't give a rat's ass about your cause - I live like I always have and you won't change me. World without end, amen.
I'm dead set against you and all the people like you who want to legislate, regulate, and proliferate this nonsense. Like passing no smoking in public ordinances. I am going to smoke and I'm going to leave my car running when it's convenient for ME and not when or where anyone else "regulates". I'll happily pay the ticket "if" I get one. Feeling that Jackson has been invaded by "do-gooders" and they've stept once too often on Liberty, I'm set to fight back.
I simply do not believe that you folks don't have anything better to do than wait around to find somebody who left their car running to put a STUPID comment on it. You think you're making people "think" and "be aware" or "care"? Just pissed ME off. Turned me against you. THERE IS NO CREDIBLE EVIDENCE THAT GLOBAL WARMING IS HARMING OUR PLANET!!!!!!!!! I would have left you alone if you hadn't molested me.
Get a real job. Get a life. Or Better yet, get out of town but don't be touching my car - ENFORCING THIS LAW IS NOT YOUR JOB!
Besides, the gas I saved by leaving my car running rather than restarting it just about made up for the wasted paper used in making your stupid little card huh? I lit my cigarette with it.
I truely mean this with humor - QUIT WORRYING ABOUT WHAT EVERY BODY ELSE IS DOING TO THE PLANET AND GO TAKE A HIKE! That's the way to do your part. Go pick up trash - not spread it!
Life is too short - you really need to mind your own business. If I see anybody putting anything on my car again -I'll have the police there - attempted car theft - much more serious offence no?
kp :
WOW! I seemed to have touched a nerve…guess Christine didn't notice the "please" before she lit her cigarette.
By the way, it was 50° the day Christine left her car idling.

The saddest thing about this letter is that are millions of other greedy, ignorant American's with the same view. Sounds like she's the one that needs to reconnect and take a hike.

I think its asinine to make it illegal to leave your car running. I don't see why everyone buys into this kind of BS - people's property is their property - warming your car up in the winter or cooling it down in the summer shouldn't be illegal.
PS
smoking is healthier than facism.

I Love the cards as a matter of fact we at N&M Cooling and Heating are requiring all delivery trucks that are in our parking lot for more than 1 minute to turn them off.
I'd like to do something about fast food drive thru's as well.
Hay Christine…we all breathe the polluted air and pay the higher gas prices and some of us have lost loved ones because of oil consumption related terrorist attacks and wars.
I'll make sure to print my cards on something biodegradeable lik paper not plastic.
