America's greenest Christmas tree?
Nov
The Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center may be the most visible statement of the greening of America this holiday season. Standing 84-feet tall, the tree will be decorated with 30,000 LED lights.
According to an Associated Press story:
Using the energy-efficient LEDs to replace incandescent bulbs will reduce the display's electricity consumption from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day. The daily savings is equal to the amount of electricity consumed by a typical 2,000-square-foot house in a month.
In addition, the building's owners have installed a 365 panel solar energy array that will power the lights on the tree.
Not one to miss a quotable opportunity, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg touted the message this tree will communicate to millions of locals and tourists alike:
Now they will see an example of green leadership which may inspire them to make greener choices in their own lives.
