In a recent article titled Handicapping the Environmental Gold Rush, the Wall Street Journal painted a sobering picture of increased energy demand in the year 2030: a 38% increase in global energy demand, with only a very modest change in the balance of supply.
Here's a chart based on data provided from the International Energy Agency's World Outlook:
| 2004 | 2030 | |
| Oil | 35.2% | 32.2% |
| Coal | 24.8% | 22.8% |
| Natural Gas | 20.5% | 21.9% |
| Biomass and Waste | 10.5% | 11.1% |
| Nuclear | 6.4% | 6.9% |
| Hydroelectric | 2.2% | 2.7% |
| Other renewables | 0.5% | 2.4% |
| Total (metric tons) | 11.2 billion tons | 15.43 billion tons |
Of course, it's nice to see the growth in dependence on renewable sources of energy, but we've got to better than the International Energy Agency predicts!
