In a recent article titled Handicapping the Environmental Gold Rush, the Wall Street Journal painted a sobering picture of increased energy demand in the year 2030: a 38% increase in global energy demand, with only a very modest change in the balance of supply.

Here's a chart based on data provided from the International Energy Agency's World Outlook:

  2004 2030
Oil 35.2% 32.2%
Coal 24.8% 22.8%
Natural Gas 20.5% 21.9%
Biomass and Waste 10.5% 11.1%
Nuclear 6.4% 6.9%
Hydroelectric 2.2% 2.7%
Other renewables 0.5% 2.4%
Total (metric tons) 11.2 billion tons 15.43 billion tons

Of course, it's nice to see the growth in dependence on renewable sources of energy, but we've got to better than the International Energy Agency predicts!
