off topic redux
Oct
Three weeks ago, I ventured off topic with a rant about Homeland Security Chief Chertoff's plans to go ahead with wall building along the Arizona border with Mexico in spite of the environmental impacts of doing so.
Actually, Chertoff advanced the point of view that building the wall would be better for the environment than what happens when people illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico line.
Since then, Chertoff has continued down the path of disregard, announcing that he would waive numerous environmental, cultural and other federal laws in order to proceed with construction of that border wall (and a road) in southeastern Arizona. Here's the list from NRDC:
- Clean Water Act
- Clean Air Act
- Safe Drinking Water Act
- Solid Waste Disposal Act
- Superfund
- National Environmental Protection Act
- National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act
- Migratory Bird Treaty Act
- National Historic Preservation Act
- Archeological Resources Protection Act
- Historic Preservation Act
- Antiquities Act
- Noise Control Act
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
- Federal Land Policy and Management Act
- Farmland Protection Act
For anyone who's interested, here's a link to an on topic rant from David Roberts at Gristmill.
I still consider the immigration debate off topic for this blog, but as long as Chertoff insists on pulling the environment into the debate, I'll continue to rail against him.
