finally, a conference?
Oct
Last Friday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was (finally) prepared to seek a conference with the House on energy policy legislation. It's about time!
Even with the threat of a White House veto, Congress has got to reach consensus on strategies and policies that will curb our consumption of fossil fuels and encourage development of sources of renewable energy.
Of course, as a story in Forbes says:
There's no guarantee a conference between the two chambers would produce a comprehensive energy bill. But if nothing gets passed by the end of December, forget about it happening amid the 2008 presidential politics in play.
In regards to President Bush's threatened veto, Forbes noted:
Earlier this week, one of Bush's chief advisers sent Congressional leaders a memo telling them what an energy bill must contain in order to be considered by the president. On the list: an ambitious plan to increase ethanol and biofuel production, and a distinction between fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks. It also may not include a provision mandating major utilities acquire some of their power from renewable fuels.
Stay tuned for news as the week unfolds.
