getting to Las Vegas

This seems to be a week for streaks. I ranted for three straight days about our President, and now Specialized Bicycles goes two-for-two.

A little over a month ago, I wrote about the Interbike trade show and its efforts to go green. One of the initiatives was a challenge to exhibitors:

After three years of implementing its Green Steps Program to reduce the show's environmental impact, Interbike is now asking exhibitors and attendees to help with the next step…

Interbike has now launched the Carbon Neutral Travel Program. Participants of this program are asked to calculate the amount of carbon emissions or "footprint" for their travel to Interbike. This includes travel to and from the show and any transportation while attending the show.

Well, Mike Sinyard, the founder of Specialized, did as much as he could to reduce Specialized's Interbike travel carbon footprint to zero. Per a report in RoadBikeRider.com's e-newsletter:

He and several of his employees rode the 600 miles to Las Vegas for Interbike, beginning from their HQ in Morgan Hill, California. The five-day trek (oops!) took them over 8,453-foot (2,564-meter) Owens Peak in the Sierra Mountains and below sea level through Death Valley. Explains Sinyard, "We realize that not everyone can ride on their next business trip, but we hope that our adventure will encourage others to find fun and adventurous ways to cut their carbon footprint and help battle climate change with-pedal powered solutions."

For this effort, as well as the Innovate or Die contest I wrote about yesterday, Mike Sinyard and the folks at Specialized deserve a double dose of kudos.
