sleeping in

As I mentioned in my post yesterday, the whole world will be watching our President this week to see what he does, or doesn't do to confront global warming.

Well folks, sad to say, he's not getting off to a very good start. According to the New York Times:

Dozens of world leaders are to gather at the United Nations on Monday for a full agenda of talks on how to fight global warming, and President Bush is skipping all the day’s events but the dinner.

In his place, Condoleeza Rice will represent the U.S.

Not having ever heard her name mentioned in substantive conversations about climate change policy, I did a quick Google search  to see if Condoleeza Rice + climate change would yield anything interesting…Nope, just the usual blah, blah, blah (from the State Deparement's website).

The United States' strategy emphasizes international cooperation and promotes working with other nations to develop an efficient and coordinated response to global climate change. In taking prudent environmental action at home and abroad, the United States is advancing a pro-growth, pro-development approach to addressing this important global challenge.

To be fair, President Bush is a busy guy. Why meet with the leaders of some 80 countries at the U.N. when you've got a cozy two-day meeting planned for later in the week with 15 of your closest friends–the world's leading greenhouse gas emitting countries?

Why listen to a diversity of points of view, when you can wallow in the self-interests of the biggest offenders?

Why not just sleep in on a Monday morning?
