not holding my breath

A sampling of the weekend's headlines:

The New York Times dubs next week Climate Week in an editorial that states:

The coming week could set a record for the number of high-profile hours spent discussing global warming and what to do about it…

The problem needs all the attention it can get. But if talk is good, it is also cheap.

The Christian Science Monitor headline wonders Is Bush Edging Towards Cuts in Carbon and observes:

Critics have said that by calling for meetings late in his tenure as president, Bush is merely running out the clock before he turns over the problem to his successor. But in his invitation to world leaders, the president indicated that his view may have changed as the IPCC and other organizations confirmed with greater certainty the reality and causes of climate change.

And the Washington Post states Bush Steps Out Front on Climate Issue, while pointing out that there will not likely be any announcements of major shifts in administration policy:

Amid a mounting sense of urgency about the need for action to slow climate change, President Bush this week will be playing what is, for him, an unusually prominent role in high-level diplomatic meetings on how to confront global warming.

What he will not do, officials said, is chart any shift in policies that have put him at odds with much of the world on the issue.

So, just how will the week unfold? My bet is that our President is setting the stage for handing off yet another delicate and critical issue to his predecessor. I hope he proves me wrong.

Stay tuned.
