Environmental Defense created their Transportation Transformation Campaign to:

educate and engage our online supporters and the general public about the need to adopt innovative transportation solutions to fight gridlock, reduce traffic and cut pollution.

One key component of the campaign is the Transportation Pledge, which encourages folks to support smart transportation reforms–the need for which are clearly depicted in this excerpt from their by-the-numbers breakdown of shocking statistics:

  • 239 million cars and light trucks on U.S. roads
  • 45% of world's greenhouse gas emissions by vehicles generated in U.S.
  • 28% of U.S. contribution to global warming comes from transportation sector
  • 0 federal bills passed to cap and reduce America's global warming pollution from all sources.

To me, these numbers paint a bleak picture of a transportation system run amok. Congress seems to care more about maintaining special interest relationships (and funding) than it does solving the problem. Here's hoping that mass participation in the Transportation Transformation Campaign will provide the impetus needed for local, state and national transportation planners to get busy working on rational, reasonable, yet aggressive reforms.
