Farm Aid kudos
Sep
My friend and Journal supporter Toby of nuts & bolts just happened to be in New York last weekend and filed this report about Farm Aid 07 — A Homegrown Festival.
We went to Farm Aid yesterday on Randall’s Island where all the food was supplied by local producers They made all vendors use compostable cups and recyclable materials and reduce use of packaging. They also had attendants at all recycling/compost/garbage stations to make sure people weren’t throwing things away they shouldn’t.
Neil Young also made a huge point of discussing that local food isn’t just better for you, but it’s better for everyone because it is not trucked across country from big corporate farms.
Anyway, 22 years into Farm Aid, they now have a new movement with the organic foods movement and carbon reduction. 22 years ago, people weren’t thinking about that when they were trying to save family farms, but now these issues are huge.
As the Farm Aid wrap-up on Treehugger says:
Farm Aid wasn't just about good food and good music; it was about inspiring people to seek sustainable, organic, humanely raised, and local food, to reach out to their family farms, and to seize action to change the current system of industrial agriculture.
Kudos to Willie Nelson and the gang for leading by example.
Carbon Neutral Journal's kudos are brought to you by Grand Targhee Resort.
