but what about the bottle?

Here's a press release from Icelandic Water Holdings boasting that Icelandic Glacial will be the UK's first carbon neutral bottled water.

Ever the skeptic, I read the release carefully to see how completely the carbon footprint–and waste stream–have been addressed.

  • Production: they say they use only geothermal and hydroelectric energy.
  • Shipping: they claim to utilize empty cargo slots on scheduled sailings.
  • Commitment: "to continually assess, reduce and offset any remaining carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.

OK so far, but how about that award-winning designer bottle? No mention of its carbon footprint, or its impact on the waste stream in the press release.

Carbon Neutral? Not by my standards. Not even close.
