framing the issue(s)

Peter Madden's recent post on Gristmill raises the question: Are we too obsessed with climate change?
Good question.
Here in Jackson Hole, I can honestly say that is not the case–though some folks might say that I'm too obsessed with climate change.
Opposition to energy development in the Wyoming Range is based on myriad reasons, not just our need to reign in energy development and the greenhouse gas emissions that are part and parcel of that industry.
And, even though Lower Valley Energy's exploration of the possibility of installing turbines at Jackson Lake Dam to generate hydroelectric power is an attempt at creating a new green power source, the debate is not being framed as a climate change issue.
Nope, here in Jackson Hole I can honestly say that land use planning, oil and gas drilling, protection of the Snake River and motorized travel in the National Forests all get more direct attention in the media that climate change does. Even the Town/County effort to reduce energy use and fuel consumption 10% each by 2010 is presented as being responsible stewardship, fiscally responsible and a smart business decision–rather than as a reaction to global warming.
Of course, climate change is a driving concern for many of our elected leaders, but they've chosen the pragmatic approach of not appearing to be obsessed with climate change at the expense of all else.
So, when Peter Madden, or The Inspired Protaganist ask the question Is The Climate Crisis Too Hot An Issue, I can fully appreciate their global perspective, but have to say that's not the case here in the Hole.
