telling it like it is

Leave it to a Norwegian government agency to come up with the unvarnished truth about cars.

According to a Reuters story:

No car can be "green," "clean" or "environmentally friendly."

Cars cannot do anything good for the environment except less damage than others.

If that point of view seems a bit harsh to you, you'll never guess that the government agency in question actually sets advertising policy for the country.

Bente Oeverli, a senior official at the office of the Norwegian state-run Consumer Ombudsman, says:

If someone says their car is more 'green' or 'environmentally friendly' than others then they would have to be able to document it in every aspect from production, to emissions, to energy use, to recycling.

The tougher advertising guidelines go into effect on October 15th.
