theater of the absurd

As Alisan and I were driving to Colorado Springs last week, a story on NPR's Morning Edition caught our attention: Colorado Springs School Bans Tag!

It wasn't the coincidence of our visit to this ever-sprawling city that would seem to have bigger fish to fry than a kids' game of tag that got me all worked up, it was the absurdity of the fact that we Americans seem to be on the verge of regulating everything…

Everything, that is, except greenhouse gas emissions.

While  we create cupcakes of our kids by banning games of dodgeball and tag, we ban cupcakes from school lunch menus–where is the logic in that?

And where is the logic behind this: Dubai ski resort to be carbon neutral?

You may be wondering what's wrong with rooftop solar panels generating energy for the indoor ski resort–which will also include a penguinarium. Well folks, it's not as simple as merely meeting the energy demands of this ridiculous project with renewable sources. What about the non-carbon neutral travel impacts of all those Brits descending upon Dubai for their next ski vacation?

Whether it's carbon neutral or not, the idea of an indoor ski resort in Dubai is one of the most absurd ideas I've ever heard–almost as absurd as telling kids they can run, they just can't chase anyone.
