what's your eco-footprint?

In my recap of the Conservation International sponsored fundraising event Alisan and I attended, I focused on what the dinner speakers had to say about global warming. I didn't mention the goodies we were handed as we left the event.

From the quarterly newsletter, which focused on climate change, to the annual report, to the event brochure itself, the message was clear:

Each of us can make a difference. Every person, business and government can and must act in the best interest of their environment. Adopting a sustainable ethic across every sector of society–one that cherishes our Earth and all that it provides–is central to changing our behavior and affecting lasting progress.

Being a web guy, I would have preferred that all the material we were given had not been printed–even though it all appears to have been printed responsibly, on recycled stock with soy inks. So, after giving the print stuff a cursory glance, I dug into CI's website and found a different type of eco-calculator.

Sure there's a carbon calculator on CI's website, but I was interested in examining more than just my carbon footprint. I was interested in going beyond the usual greenhouse reducing tips I'd come to expect from such an online exercise–and I found it via the eco-footprint calculator.

Sure, there's mention of compact fluorescent bulbs and carbon offsets in CI's list of 10 things you can do every day. But there's more, too. The tip that caught my eye was about leveraging your consumer influence. I'm sure you'll find a tip that resonates with your interests.

Take some time to browse CI's website, calculate your eco-footprint and consider the tips. I'm sure you'll find it time well spent.
