parking structure update
Aug
The last time I went to Mayor Mark Barron's weekly brown bag lunch, the Global Warming Heroes League made their public debut. Since that April session, Town and County efforts toward achieving a 10% reduction in fossil fuel and electricity by 2010 have been well documented in the local newspapers.
One key Town of Jackson project which has been in the works for some time, but has stayed somewhat under the radar on the green news front, is the new parking structure being built downtown. Well folks, next Wednesday at noon, Mayor Mark is going to host his brown bag lunch at the job site at Millward and Simpson.
Be sure to stop by and get an update on what Town Administrator Bob McLaurin calls "one of the largest public facilities we've built in a long time."
But it's not just size that counts–this project will certainly be the greenest project Town has undertaken. Here's a blurb from the Brown Bag press release:
The Town is committed to being as environmentally conscious as possible with the structure. Consistent with the US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement and the 10×10 Resolution it will have several features that offset its impact. This structure will be the first of its kind in the country with special LED energy efficient lighting throughout. The building is being prepped for solar panels to be placed on the top deck to supply electricity to the building. The concrete being used has a percentage of fly ash in its mix, meaning fewer emissions resulted in the manufacturing of the material. Energy Star rated equipment will be used whenever available for heating and ventilation systems.
One tidbit missing from the release was supplied to me directly from the mayor:
the goal is to provide roughly 25% of the structure's electricity through solar.
Brown bags and hard hats are on my lunchtime menu for next Wednesday, August 22nd. How about you?
