summer reading redux

Nope, I haven't read everything on my recommended summer reading list. In fact, I haven't even had the chance to read the first book on the list–The Lazy Environmentalist. Over the past few weeks I haven't had the luxury of time for lazy reading; I haven't had time for any reading at all.

So, I thought I'd do what folks normally do when they are over committed: throw another log or two on the fire. In this case, I thought I'd add another book to the reading list.

From the Union of Concerned Scientists' website, I'm going to add The Consumer's Guide to Effective Environmental Choices. According to the blurb, the Consumer's Guide offers

the first comprehensive look at the full range of modern consumer activities, identifying those that cause the most environmental damage and those that cause the least.

If you want to look before you leap, you can download chapter 1 from the UCS website. And, as you browse the UCS publications page, you're likely to find something else of interest.

Of course, I don't have time to read The Consumer's Guide either, but it's on my short list now.

I do, however, always seem to be able to find time to do a little web surfing for interesting/entertaining interactive features, and I certainly found one on the UCS site–an editorial cartoon contest called Science Idol.

This spring, creative minds throughout America took the opportunity to show off their artistic and comedic talents in support of independent science by entering the 2nd annual Science Idol: the Scientific Integrity Editorial Cartoon Contest.

You can help pick the winning cartoon. Voting closes on July 23 at 11:59 pm.
