read `em and weep

Two headlines caught my eye this morning:

One was a Reuters story titled World CO2 output to rise 59 percent by 2030.

The other came from The Guardian and claimed the US rejects all proposals on climate change.

The irony is that the Reuters piece cites none other than the US Energy Information Administration as its source of information. Wouldn't that be the same source of information that our President and his advisors would look to for data to help inform their decisions about what to do about global warming?

That is, if the administration were actually looking to make an informed decision about what to do about global warming.

From the looks of the red-lined draft being circulated in advance of the G8 summit in a couple of weeks, the US stance is pretty clear: fundamental opposition to a German proposal to cutting global emissions, or to

curb the rise in average temperatures this century to 2C and raise energy efficiency in power and transport by 20% by 2020.

By the way, the German proposals are

compatible with policies in California and other US states, which have set their own targets and timetables.

Sounds to me like the lonesome cowboy in the White House has the heels of his boots set too deep in the sand to see the handwriting on the wall.
