maybe this will get the administration's attention

No, I'm not talking about the 1400+ Step It up 2007 events around the country yesterday, although the cumulative impact of all those events will certainly lead to more pressure on Washington to do something about global warming.

Sad to say, a report in today's Washington Post will likely be of more interest to Bush, Cheney and the military industrial complex than Step It Up 2007. Titled Military Sharpens Focus on Climate Change, the story's subhed says it all: A Decline in Resources is Expected to Cause Instability Overseas.

Duh.

Check out the list of big thinkers and organizations involved in drafting a report that states that global warming "presents significant national security challenges to the United States."

  • U.S. Army War College
  • Triangle Institute for Security Studies
  • Center for Naval Analyses
  • 11 retired senior officers, including former Army chief of staff, General Gordon, R. Sullivan, Admiral T. Joseph Lopez, General Anthony C. Zinni and Vice Admiral Richard H. Truly

Here's the money quote from Vice Admiral Truly:

…it's not like some hot spot we're trying to handle. It's going to happen to every country and every person in the whole world at the same time.

WOW! That's a point of view that really might get our President to face the reality of global warming.

Let's hope it does, and that it leads to broad understanding and appreciation of the scope of the problem–not just the threat to national security.
