getting on the bandwagon
Jan
Whether it's an energy bill co-sponsored by 2008 presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain, or a Wall Street Journal Story about ExxonMobil softening its stance on climate change, one thing is for sure–Michael Dell wasn't the only one making headlines this past week.
In fact, Michael Dell wasn't even the only celebrity businessman in the climate change headlines–Ted Turner announced that he is forming a venture with Dome-Tech Solar to target California energy markets:
Our future depends on changing the way we use energy. We've got to move away from fossil fuels and develop long-term energy solutions that work. Using clean energy technologies, such as solar power, is the right thing to do, and it represents a tremendous business opportunity.
Of course, the founder of the Captain Planet Foundation wasn't the only one to offer up his point of view on climate change.
Here's what the pols had to say about their energy bill:
Obama: With each passing year, the consequences of federal inaction on reducing greenhouse gas emissions become more devastating for our children and grandchildren, and the range of solutions grows smaller. (from the AP story)
McCain: This legislation is designed to significantly reduce the Nation's greenhouse gas emissions to prevent the dangerous impacts of climate change, enhance our national security and maintain the strength of our economy… (from McCain's website)
The bottom line, according to Larry Schweiger, president of the National Wildlife Federation:
This sets the stage for the new Congress and the 2008 presidential race on the issue of climate change. (from the AP story)
Finally, in regards to ExxonMobil's intent and motivation, I remain a skeptic. They are, however, welcome on the bandwagon.
