mind-boggling stats
Jan
I'm a storyteller, not a numbers guy. Nevertheless, I found the statistics available on the Energy Information Administration's website to be fascinating…and overwhelming. Here's some of what the state energy profile for Wyoming had to offer:
The Powder River Basin is the largest coal-producing region in the Nation, accounting for approximately 40 percent of all coal mined in the U.S.
So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that:
Many Midwestern and Southern States are highly or entirely dependent on Wyoming coal.
Nor should we be surprised to hear that:
Excluding Federal offshore production, Wyoming was the fourth leading natural gas producing state in 2005, after Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
Those stats all reinforce the story of the energy boom we've all come to know and love (or not); you know, the boom that pays the bills most other states pay through a state income tax.
Well folks, if we're smart about and invest wisely, there may be no end to the energy boom in Wyoming. According to official energy statistics supplied by the U.S. Government:
The Southeastern Wyoming Corridor is one of the most favorable locations for wind power development in the country!

In last week's stats post, I laid out the numbers regarding our household's conversion to compact fluorescent light bulbs. What I neglected to include was the macro view outlined in a recent New York Times story about Wal-Mart putting its muscle behind CFLs.
Consider these mind-boggling stats:
America's biggest company is encouraging 200 million shoppers to save energy.
Wal-Mart's goal: sell 100 million compact fluorescent bulbs this year (compared to 40 milllion sold between August 2005 and August 2006).
Achieving that goal would increase total sales of CFLs in the U.S. by 50%…
Which would save Americans $3 billion in electricity costs and preclude the need to build additional power plants for the equivalent of 450,000 new homes.
